Let x = the number. Then:

6x - 10 = 8

6x = 18

x = 18/3

x = 6

The number is 3

The equation would come out to be 6x-10=8

And if you simplify that you get 6x=18

and you divide 6 on both sides and cross the 6's on the left out and evaluate 18/6 and it would be

x=3
