x + y = 17 ⇒ (1)

Their difference is 29 .

x - y = 29 ⇒ (2)

x + y + ( x - y ) = 17 + 29

x + y + x -y = 46

2x = 46

Divide both sides by 2.

x = 23

And now let us find the values of y.

x + y = 17

23 + y = 17

y = 17 - 23
