To find where the ordered pair is a solution to the equation, we must plug in the ordered pair:

      [tex]y = \frac{1}{2} x -3\\1 = \frac{1}{2}(-8) - 3\\1 = -7\\\\[/tex]

So therefore (-8,1) isn't a solution to y= 1/2x -3

Hope that helps!
