1)  (12²)³ ₓ 12⁻⁴ =     multiply exponents when you raise an exponent to an exp.
       12⁶ ₓ 12⁻⁴ =      add
         12²

2) (12⁷ ₓ 12⁻⁵) / 12² =      add the exponents up top
     12² / 12² =                  move all numbers to numerator and change signs
     12² ₓ 12⁻² =                add the exponents
