How does not having a nucleus affect a red blood cell?

It affects it in many ways. 

1) It makes it more hollow, allowing it to carry more oxygen 

2) Because it has no nucleus it is not a "forever" cell, so they "die" once they have been alive for 3-4 months. After they "die" they must be replaced.
