During Middle ages, Mental illness was believed to be caused by Evil Spirits.

Due to a lack of medical knowledge and prevalent myths and folklore, anything beyond the understanding of humans was assumed to be a work of magic, ghosts, witches and evil spirits.

It was not until the 19th century when mental illness was classified as a medical problem.
