ok i think we are talking about distance, i believe, hence "units". So all negative numbers should be positive making the equation look like this 13 + 18 + 13

If it is a regular equation then it will look like, : -13 + [(-13) + 18].

Well, since you are moving to the right, so you are adding. Therefor the equation is -13+18. This would be 5.
